St John's School

End of term arrangements due to unprecedented heat forecast for next week.

End of term arrangements due to unprecedented heat forecast for next week.

Dear Parents,

I have been working with the Education Department and carefully monitoring the current extreme weather conditions in Jersey forecast for this weekend and through to Monday and Tuesday of next week. It is currently forecast to be 37 °C on Monday and 34 °C on Tuesday.

Following a meeting with all Headteachers, it has been widely agreed that in schools without air conditioning, early closure is advisable.

Reflecting on this, the vast majority of schools have agreed, that for the safety of our pupils and staff, we will close the school at 1200 on Monday.

We appreciate this may present a challenge for you; we are a strong community and I know you will support one another where you can.

If you take the decision to keep your child at home on Monday, because you feel it's safer for your child, this absence will be authorised in these exceptional circumstances.

It is likely that this will be the same for Tuesday, but we do not want to commit to this until first thing Monday morning, when we have a clearer idea of the temperature.

Changes to end of term plans are as follows:

Mrs De La Haye’s Retirement celebration will now take place at 9;30 am on Monday 18th July.

Tuesday – whole school final assembly for the school, will take place at 9:00 am, as already planned.

Year 6 Leavers’ Assembly – will take place at 11:30 am due to the likelihood that the school will be closed again on Tuesday Lunchtime, due to the continued high temperatures.

We have had to change these timings to ensure our leavers can celebrate their journey at St John’s and have the necessary closure to their time in this school.

Thank you for your continued support during these challenging and unprecedented times.

Another difficult decision following a challenging year of difficult decisions.

Kind regards,

The St John’s Team
